USSD is a service where bank transactions can be carried out by dialing simple shortcodes on mobile phones. USSD transaction does not require the use of internet or mobile apps, which ensure that customers who do not have access to the internet can use the USSD service to make banking transactions.

Different Banks in Nigeria now have their distinct USSD codes which make it possible for their customers to perform transaction like transfer of funds, airtime purchase, subscription payment etc.

For you to be able to use the USSD code for your bank, you will need to have access to the mobile number used to open the account with the bank or the mobile number that has been linked to the account. if this has not been done then the transaction will not be possible using the USSD code.

USSD is especially popular with the lower class in Nigeria. This is because despite the fact that internet adoption has grown in Nigeria, the relative high cost of data and digital literacy still serves as a hindrance, and thus, not everyone can easily access the internet. Yet, others ca still access the internet from all major networks such as 9mobile, MTN, Glo, and can get dedicated cyber internet from service providers and data centres like MDXi and Rack Centre.

A mobile transaction using USSD codes require account registration for first-time users and a PIN code (either 4 or 5 digits) which can be done by simply dialing the bank USSD code and following the screen prompts. The PIN code serves as your security against fraudsters and will be required for all your subsequent transactions.
