Origins
Boko Haram is actually the nickname in the Hausa language for the group officially known in Arabic as “Jama’atuAhlisSunnaLidda’awatiWal-Jihad”—the People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet’s Teachings and Jihad. Coined by northern Muslims and subsequently picked up by the press, the name Boko Haram translates loosely as “Western education is forbidden” and is derived from one of the chief tenets of the teachings of Muhammad Yusuf, the group’s early leader, who claimed that Western-style education (“Boko” in Hausa) and the holding of government jobs are religiously forbidden, or haram, under Islam.

Below is the most comprehensive history of Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria starting from the first attack in 2009
till date
After years of tension and a series of minor incidents, things finally exploded in July 2009 when a prominent member of Boko Haram died, and a large number of them were on the way to bury him. They were stopped by the police who quizzed them about their lack of helmets as the new law dictated. An argument began, and in the process, shots got fired. People on both sides got injured and things went out of hand. Boko Haram attacked in Bauchi, Borno and Yobe states, killing several policemen. In Maiduguri, they took over town, and controlled it for three days, doing what they please until the army was called in to help. Eventually, the army regained control and arrested a lot of Boko Haram members, including Mohammed Yusuf.
2010
September
On the 7th of September, Boko Haram carried out a jailbreak in Bauchi where 5 individuals were murdered and 721 inmates were freed from jail in Bauchi by presumed Boko Haram shooters.
December
On the 31st of December, a bomb attack outside a barracks killed 4 civilians.
2011
May
On the 29th May, 15 individuals were murdered in Abuja and Bauchi after bombs detonate in a few towns in northern Nigeria.
June
On the 16th of June, the group executed another attack in Abuja police central station at least 2 people, the perpetrator and a traffic policeman, were killed in a failed bombing of the Abuja police headquarters. It was Nigeria’s first record of a suicide bombing.
August
August 26, Boko Haram attacked the Abuja compound of United Nations, 21 individuals were killed.
November
On the 4th of November, Boko Haram attackedYobe state capital, Damaturu and killing between 100 and 150 individuals.
December
December 22nd – 23rd, 68 people, of whom were 50 Boko Haram militants, no less than 7 soldiers, and 11 regular citizens were killed in a fight between Boko Haram militants and Nigerian soldiers in Maiduguri and Damaturu.
December 25th, 41 individuals were killed by Boko Haram bomb blasts and shootings in Christian places of worship.
2012

On the 5th of January, 37 Christians were killed by Boko Haram militants in northeastern Nigeria

January 10, a female suicide bomber, believed to be around 10 years old, killed herself and 19 others, possibly against her will, at a market in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, Nigeria.
January 11, two female suicide bombers, each believed to be around 10 years old, kill themselves and three others at a market in the northeastern city of Potiskum, Nigeria.
January 24, 15 people were killed as Boko Haram gunmen attempted to burn down the village of Kambari near Maiduguri.
January 25, Boko Haram rebels launched a large offensive attack against the Nigerian forces in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, leading to the deaths of at least 8 civilians, up to 53 militants, and an unknown number of soldiers.Although the attack failed, the rebels manage to capture the nearby strategic town of Monguno.
January 28, Boko Haram fighters killed 40 people while on a rampage in Adamawa State.
February

July 5, 5 people died after a suicide bomber attacked a church in the Potiskum area of Nigeria’s Yobe State.
July 6, two bomb attacks on the central Nigerian city of Jos have left at least 44 people dead.
November
17 November, a blast in the northeastern Nigerian city of Yola killed 32 people and wounded 80 people.
2016
January
6 January, Boko Haram gunmen raided Izageki village in northern Nigeria, close to Sambisa Forest, Boko Haram’s hideout and killed at least two people. The gunmen pursued fleeing civilians and another militant armed with a suicide belt blew himself near a market, killing another five people
13 January, a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque at Kouyape, close to the Nigerian border. The blast killed twelve people and wounded another one.
27 January, about 65 people were killed in multiple attacks during the weekend in various villages in Dalori and outskirts of Maiduguri.
A 12-year-old blew himself up in the Gombis’ market. The blast killed at least 11 people. The attack occurred on 29 January in Gombi, Nigeria.
30 January, 86 people were killed and hundreds others injured in an attack by Boko Haram militants on Dalori Village some 4 kilometers from Maiduguri, Nigeria.
March
16 March, 3 female suicide bombers killed 22 people and injured 18 in Umarari Village, on the outskirts of Maiduguri, Borno State.

1 August, 3 churches and 9 Christian was burnt by militants and 9 Christian villagers were killed.
