Everyone young person seeking admission into any of Nigeria’s higher institution of learning can now easily gain admission into their institutions of choice with the last ratification certified by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) during her Combined Policy Meetings on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria which held on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 for the 2017/2018 academic session. The examination body surprisingly set 120 as the minimum mark for degree-awarding institutions and 180 as the highest an institution can fix. As for Polytechnics/ Colleges of Education 100 is the lowest mark that qualifies a candidate for admission, while the admission cut-off mark for Innovative Enterprise Institutions was pegged at110.

Although the board clearly pegged the various cut off marks for the different, it nevertheless agreed that the decision is not binding on the various institutions as they are at liberty to set their own cut off as long as it is between the ratified figures. Reports, however, have it that some highly competitive universities like Unilag, Unizik, UNN, A B U Zaria and other top Federal universities have made their cut off marks to remain 180 nonetheless. It can be recalled that as of 2017, JAMB CBT cut-off marks of all universities ranging from state to federal general nationwide was 180 while for polytechnics and college of education, it was 150.

Essentially, a cut off mark is the minimum mark a candidate needs to score for him/her to gain admission into a particular educational institution or gain admission to study a particular course.
